SOTM concert helps families get in rhythm
By staff report
 |
Symphony of the Mountains’ next performance will feature a variety of masterworks and popular music that audience members will easily recognize.
Under the baton of music director and conductor Cornelia Kodkani-Laemmli, SOTM will present the “I've Got Rhythm Family Concert” at 3 p.m., Sunday, in the Kegley Auditorium of Harrison-Jones Memorial Hall at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol. The concert will be repeated on Monday for school children at no charge.
The concert will feature “I Got Rhythm” by George Gershwin; the first movement of Beethoven’s powerful “Symphony No. 5 in C minor”; Strauss’ “Blue Danube Waltz”; Scot Joplin’s “The Entertainer”; and the fast and furious samba from Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Evita.”
A lesser known work called “The Worried Drummer” will feature the Symphony’s principal percussionist Jay Oberfeitinger racing from instrument to instrument in this fast-paced novelty piece.
The symphony will be joined by the Virginia Middle School Honor Choir, directed by Sandra Kerney. Voices of the Mountains’ Sarah Beth Kerr will be soloist.
At 2 p.m., Sunday, prior to the performance, volunteers from Voices of the Mountains, the chorus of Symphony of the Mountains, will host an instrument building workshop for children. Participants will be able to make instruments from everyday objects, such as shoe boxes, food containers, soda straws and aluminum pie pans. They will have the opportunity to “play” these instruments during the concert.
Following the concert, SOTM musicians will meet the children in the lobby and host an instrumental petting zoo where the students can play the professional instruments.
